Cousin Quilt - Archive

FALL 2023

Project Brief: The purpose of this assignment is to appropriate existing images and create a new work. Using techniques of sequencing, composition, seriality, collage, text / image relationships, montage, radical juxtaposition construct a project. You will be utilizing photos and collage work as the medium for this assignment, which can be produced in a digital or physical format.

For my project, I created a quilt from an archive of my cousin's childhood portraits, one physical and one digital.

I collected 56 photographs from 23 of my aunts and uncles. Each photo was a baby or toddler photo of each one of my cousins. I also gathered magazines and fabric that was last used by my mother to make quilts for my siblings and I when we were babies. By using these materials, I created a present archive using materials from my childhood. I hand cut, placed, and pasted each of my cousins on their corresponding square. I then transferred the final organization to Photoshop where I created the gif.

My biggest focus was to captivate the audience. I wanted to engage the audience and not let them focus only on one child, but to see the family as a whole, using a colorful palette to make the piece seem more childlike.
